Victoria Drive

1902 December – The Board of Works approved a “2-plank walk on Victoria Drive from Venables to William Street on the first of the year.” i

In the middle of June 1904, City Council received a letter from Alexander Tregent of the VPOA “in relation to work on Victoria Drive and protesting against re-grading of streets necessitating the relaying of water mains.” They were concerned that work was being done on Victoria without plans being lodged in the Engineer’s office. These, along with a request from P.M. Coffey, new owner of lots 9-12, block 54, for block clearance, and a second request from D.L. Milne for clearing a street edge at block A 171, was referred to the BOW.ii

April 1905 — The following acquisitions from Appropriations were approved by the Board of Works: iii

              Ward 3 Grading Victoria Drive $1,000

              Ward 4 Grading Cotton Drive $ 260

              Ward 4 Grading Woodland Drive $ 260

              Ward 4 Grading Bismark Street $ 200

November 1905 — The Board approved a three-plank sidewalk on Venables from Woodland to Park Drives for $117, and on Park Drive from Graveley to First for $35. iv

1906 February – Board of Works approved a sidewalk on Victoria from Grant to Bismark at a cost of $38. v

1906 February — The Board of Works approved the following for future estimates: Victoria, Parker to Napier, open, $250. The Board approved the following work: Victoria, 6th to City Limits, open & grade, $2,400. vi

1906 March — “Victoria Drive [will be] graded and rocked in a few months.”vii

1906 April — J. McNichol complains of conditions at Victoria Drive & Fifth Avenue. Referred to Engineer.viii

1906 June – Appropriation #315 ordered Victoria Drive to be graded and rocked from Powell to 6th Avenue at an estimated cost of $6,800. The work order was issued in July. Costs from July 1906 to December were $4,381.66 in labour and $2,275.67 in materials. Also that month the work gang was ordered to remove stumps on the south east corner of Victoria and William. The work was not completed until 6th November. ix

1906 September — “Grand View residential lots, first time on the market; 26 splendid lots situated on block 144b on 2nd and 3rd Avenues and Victoria Drive. 8 of them front on Victoria Drive … Victoria Drive is being rocked.”x

1907 April – A work order to grade and rock Victoria Drive from William to 6th Avenue was issued on 18th April. At a meeting on 4th June 1907, the Grandview Progress Association passed the following resolution: “That the attention of the Council be drawn to the fact that the fine weather is passing whilst the authorities (sic) work of rocking Victoria Drive to 6th Avenue is at a stand still.” The work was completed on 12th September. xi

1907 August – A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the east side of Victoria Drive between 3rd and 6th Avenues. The work was completed on 28th September. xii

1907 October – “I would like to draw your attention to the necessity of grading the sidewalk between William and Charles on Victoria Drive. I have a house there and entrance to same under present conditions is difficult.”xiii

1907 November – A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the east side of Victoria between William and Bismark. The work was completed on 8th January 1908. xiv

1908 March – Victoria Drive was rocked from 6th to 12th Avenues. The work under foreman G.H. Blair was completed on 22nd September. xv

“Instructions have been given for the commencement of the construction of the trestle over the tracks at Victoria Drive. The work on Park Drive will be continued and made to full width as agreed upon as soon as possible.”xvi

1909 May – A sewer was laid under Victoria Drive from Charles Street to a point 200’ north. The work was completed on 2nd June. xvii

1909 May – A sewer was laid under Victoria Drive from William Street to 6th Avenue. The work was completed on 15th July. xviii

1909 July – 6’ concrete sidewalk proposed for both sides of Victoria Drive between Hastings Street and Grant Street. Cost $8,466.48 with city paying $2,307.47 under By Laws 563 and 624.xix

1910 April – A sewer was laid under Victoria Drive from Venables to a point 200’ south. The work was completed on 11th May. xx

1911 May — “A great many new residences are being erected on Victoria Drive this spring and by fall we hope to have this street Grandview’s best street.”xxi

1911 August — “Lots on the corner of Victoria Drive and First Avenue are being cleared for the erection of four houses.”xxii

1912 March – These houses on Victoria Drive received their sewer permits this month: 2153 (W.W. Wolfenden), 2159 (E. Haide) and T. Gaedes at lot 24 Blk 10 DL 183 (just west of Park Drive).xxiii

1912 April – 6’ concrete sidewalk proposed for the west side of Victoria Drive from Grant Street to Broadway at a cost of $4,507.50 with the city paying $787.65.xxiv

1912 April — These houses on Victoria Drive received their sewer permits this month: 1630 and 1636 (H.P. Newman), 1722 (C. Farmer), 2139 (Jeff Farmer), 2149 (D. Cottee), and 2163 (G.M. Johnstone).xxv

1912 June – 6’ concrete sidewalk is proposed for the east side of Victoria Drive from Grant Street to 7th Avenue at a cost of $3,571.50 with the city paying $909.37.xxvi

1913 May – 42’ asphalt pavement proposed for Victoria Drive between Powell Street and 12th Avenue at a cost of $217,095.00 with the city paying $89,041.00. xxvii

1913 June – 6’ concrete sidewalk on both sides of Victoria Dive between Hastings and Grant at a cost of $10,318.70 with the city paying $2,179.63. xxviii
