Second Avenue


1906 May – The Board recommended that Second Avenue be opened from Cotton to Woodland for $300. A work order was issued for clearing and grading on 21st May and the work was completed by 7th November. i

1906 September — “2nd Avenue is to be cleared.”ii

1906 October – A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the south side of 2nd Avenue between Woodland and McLean Drives. The work was completed on 9th January 1907. Also in October the chain gang was ordered to cut a trail to make 2nd Avenue “passable” from Clark Drive to one block east. iii

1907 August — The Grandview Progress Association unanimously passed a resolution “that the Council be urged to open … 2nd Avenue east from Park Drive to Victoria Drive.” Another 13 residents wrote to the Board about “the urgent necessity of 2nd Avenue from Park Drive to Victoria Drive being opened. There is already one building in course of erection in the said locality and other owners are preparing to build but experience difficulty owing to the street not now being open.” iv

J.H. Brown wrote to the Board of Works: “As I am about to commence building on lot 15 Block 144b facing 2nd Avenue Grand View would like to have street cleared. If this cannot be done at present would like to have stumps blasted close to said lot.” 1

1907 October – A trail was cut along Second Avenue from Park Drive to Lakewood. The work was completed on 25th November. v

1909 January – Stumps were cleared at 2nd Avenue and Lakewood. vi

1909 February – Second Avenue was cleared and graded from Victoria Drive to Lakewood. The work was completed on 12th June. vii

1909 September – A sewer was laid along 2nd Avenue from Park Drive to a point 530’ east. Bourgoyne was the foreman and the work was completed by 30th September. viii

1912 April – 6’ concrete sidewalk proposed for both sides of 2nd Avenue from Victoria Drive to Woodland Drive at a cost of $5,181.00 with the city paying $548.13.ix

1912 May – The following houses on 2nd Avenue received their sewer permits this month: 1849 (R. Thompson) and 1857 (M. Russell).x

1912 June – 6’ concrete sidewalk is proposed for the south side of 2nd Avenue from Victoria Drive to Lakewood Drive at a cost of $1,305.00 with the city paying $131.85.xi

1913 June – 6’ concrete sidewalk on both sides of 2nd Avenue between Victoria Drive and Woodland Drive at a cost of $5,287.44 with the city paying $399.08. xii
