Graveley Street

“Yes, Graveley Street is named after me. I had a lot of property in DL 195, 264a, and 200a. Odlum Drive is named after Professor Edward Odlum, Grant Street – after John Grant, well known businessman of Victoria whose brother lived at Melville Street.”i

1903 July — The Board of Works received two letters requesting the opening of Graveley Street east of Park Drive. After a report from the City Engineer in early August, the Board approved the work to be performed by the chain gang. ii

1904 September — Council: “From W.G. Wilson, complaining of a drain which crosses his lot at the corner of Grant Street and Cotton Drive., Grandview, which flooded his property. Referred to BOW.”iii

1905 January — A.J. Milam wrote to the Board asked for an extension of the walk on the south side of Graveley. It was referred to the Engineer.iv

1905 March — H.N. Morgan and others asked that the sidewalk on Graveley Street be extended to Woodland Drive. The request was put over for estimates.v

1905 August — The Board approved the $52 cost for a 3-plank walk on the south side of Graveley Street from Park Drive to Salsbury as requested by E.A. Rowley and others. vi

1905 September — Mrs Elizabeth Shunn called attention to the condition of the sidewalk on the north side of Graveley Street west of Park Drive. By the end of the month the Engineer could report that “these walks are being relaid at this present time.” vii

1906 January — viiiA.J. Milam wrote to the Board asked for an extension of the walk on the south side of Graveley. It was referred to the Engineer.ix

1906 February — The Board of Works approved the following for future estimates: Graveley, Salsbury to Victoria, open & grade, $400.x

1906 March — The Board of Works resolved to ask for $30,000 for Street Improvements in the following year’s estimates as follows: Graveley, Salsbury to Victoria, open & grade, $400. xi

1906 December – The Board of Works approved the grading of Graveley from Park to Salsbury Drives for $125. The work under foreman George Freeman was completed on 20th March 1907.xii

1908 March — “I intend erecting a dwelling house on lot 8, block 138” on Graveley Street east of Victoria Drive. “There are a number of stumps on the street in close proximity to the proposed residence site.” The work was approved and was completed on 14th October.xiii

1908 October – A sewer was laid under Graveley from Park Drive to the lane east of Salsbury Drive. The work, under foreman Sutch, was completed on 15th February 1909. xiv

1909 June – Graveley was cleared and graded between Garden and Nanaimo. The work was completed on 23rd July.xv

1909 September – Graveley was cleared and graded between Semlin and Lakewood. The work was completed on 28th October.xvi

1910 March – Graveley was cleared and rough graded between Lakewood and Garden. The work was completed on 3rd June.xvii

1911 June — “The grading on Grant and Graveley Streets is progressing favourably. Opinions differ as to the value of the change.” xviii

1912 April – 6’ concrete sidewalk on both sides of Graveley between Commercial and Woodland Drives was proposed at a cost of $2,542.50 with the city paying $221.77. xix

1912 June – 6’ concrete sidewalk is proposed for both sides of Graveley from Commercial Drive to Lakewood Drive at a cost of $5,220.00 with the city paying $728.35.xx

1913 June – 6’ concrete sidewalk is proposed for both sides of Graveley Street between Commercial Drive and Lakewood Drive at a cost of $5,576.10 with the city paying $398.84. xxi
