Grant Street

“Grant Street – after John Grant, well known businessman of Victoria whose brother lived at Melville Street.”i

1902 August – “The ward foreman was instructed to blow out stumps at corner of Park Drive & Grant Street.” ii

1903 October — Edward Odlum wrote to request that Grant Street be opened from Park to Victoria Drives, and what was presumably Salsbury Drive between Grant and Graveley. The Board agreed to blow out the stumps on Grant. iii

1904 September — Scott will have a trail made to his place on Grant Street, lot 10, subdiv A + C4 of block 138, 264a.”iv

1904 September — Council: “From W.G. Wilson, complaining of a drain which crosses his lot at the corner of Grant Street and Cotton Drive., Grandview, which flooded his property. Referred to BOW.”v

1905 August – Thomas P. West asked that the boulevard in front of his lot 6 block 54 on Grant Street be cleared. He also asked for a sidewalk from Park Drive to his lot. The Board approved the sidewalk for a cost of $96.35 and ordered the boulevard “to be attended to later in the season.” vi

1905 October — Miss Briggs wrote about the condition of Grant Street, and the Engineer was ordered to make a report. vii

1906 January – Grant Street was cleared and graded between Victoria Drive and the City Limits for a length of 2,100’. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed on 25 October. A note in the work order file says this was “an emergency case.” viii

1906 February — the Board of Works approved a sidewalk on Grant from Park Drive to Victoria Drive for a cost of $165. ix

1906 March – Appropriation #102 dated 27 March 1906 ordered the opening and grading of Grant Street from Victoria Drive to city limits, a length of 2,100 feet at an estimate of $1,050. Between February and September 1906 the Engineer spent $917.01 on labour and $164.41 in materials. Also from March, the south side of Grant from Park Drive to 200’ east of Victoria Drive received a 3-plank sidewalk. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed on 21 June.x

“2 lots. Grant Street. $700.” “5 lots on Grant Street just above Victoria Drive, street cleared up to lots, now being opened up to city boundary. $1,600.” xi

1906 May – Appropriation #301 dated 14 May 1906 ordered Grant cleared and graded from Clark to Park Drive at an estimated cost of $500. From July to November, the Engineer spent $565.10 on labour and $6 on materials.xii

1906 July – Three-plank sidewalk was laid on the north side between Park Drive and a point 250’ east. George Freemen was the foreman and the work was completed on 10 August. xiii

1906 September – Grant Street was cleared and graded between Clark and Park Drives. xiv

1907 February – A three-plank sidewalk was laid on the south side of Grant Street between Victoria Drive and Semlin Drive. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed on 20th March. xv

1907 May – The chain gang cleared and graded Grant Street east of Park Drive. A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the south side of Grant Street between Clark Drive and McLean Drive. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed 28 June. xvi

1907 Aug — “Grant is opened through to city boundary.”xvii

1907 November – A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on Grant Street between Semlin Drive and 110’ east. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed on 13 February 1908. xviii

1908 August – Grant Street was graded between Clark and Victoria Drives. The work was completed on 14 October. xix

1908 August – Grant Street was graded between Lakewood and Semlin Drives. The work was completed on 14 October. xx

1909 February – A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the south side of Grant between Woodland and Cotton. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed on 26 March. Also in February, work began on a new sewer on Grant between Park Drive and Victoria Drive. D. White was the foreman and the work was completed on 13 April. xxi

1909 April – A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the north side of Grant between Victoria and Lakewood Drive. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed on 11 May.xxii

1909 July – 6’ concrete sidewalk proposed for both sides of Grant Street between Park and Victoria Drives. Cost $2,112.00 with city paying $606.80 under By Laws 563 and 624.xxiii

1909 August — A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the south side of Grant between Semlin Drive and a point 160’ east. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed on 14 Oct. That same month, a new sewer was laid on Grant between Victoria and Lakewood Drives. D. White was the foreman and the work was completed on 30 September. xxiv

1909 November — A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the south side of Grant between Salsbury Drive and a point 144’’ west. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed on 13 Dec. A 3-plank sidewalk was also laid on the north side of Grant between Lakewood Drive and a point 250’ west. Once again, George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed on 4th January 1910. xxv

1910 May – Grant Street was graded for a concrete sidewalk between Park Drive and Victoria Drive. xxvi

1911 June — “The grading on Grant and Graveley Streets is progressing favourably. Opinions differ as to the value of the change.” xxvii

1912 July – 6’ concrete sidewalks were proposed for both sides of Grant between Commercial and Victoria Drives at a cost of $3,048.94 with the city paying $973.09.xxviii
