Fourth Avenue

1904 March – “D.G. McLennan and E.A. Rowling [asked] for the opening of 4th Avenue between Park Drive and Woodland Drive.” This was laid over to the next estimates.i

1905 May and June — H.B Tagg asked that 4th Avenue west of Park Drive be opened for up to 300 feet. This was referred to the Engineer. ii

1905 November — Mr. H.B. Tagg and others asked for 4th Avenue to be opened between Park and Woodland Drives. However, the Engineer could find no money for the work. iii

1906 January — H.B. Tagg and others wrote to the Board of Works to open 4th Avenue from Park Drive to Woodland Drive. Request was referred to the Engineer for reports. iv

1906 February – John H. Langdale and others wrote to the Board asking that 4th Avenue be opened up between Park and Woodland. Referred to Engineer. The work order was issued in March.v

1906 August – “The appropriation for the opening of 4th Avenue from Park Drive to Woodland Drive is within $41 at the present time of being exhausted.”vi

1906 October – A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the north side of 4th Avenue between Park Drive and 550’ west. The work was completed on 26 February 1907. vii

1907 January – “Fourth Avenue from Park Drive west has been graded for a sidewalk and I understand the work is waiting for lumber. The grading stops at lot 29. I intend to build on lot 30 right away.”viii

1907 April — 13 residents petitioned the Board of Works: “… taxpayers of 4th Avenue & Victoria Drive wish to have the Avenue opened between Victoria Drive & Semlin and city water as there are 10 or more families drinking surface water soon will not be able to get any water when the dry season comes.” ix

1907 May – 4th Avenue was cleared and rough graded from Victoria Drive to Semlin. The work was completed on 12th September. x

1907 October – A trail was cut along 4th Avenue from Park Drive to a point 400’ east. The work was completed by 25th November. xi

1909 February – Fourth Avenue was cleared and graded from Semlin to the City Limits. The work was completed on 12th June. xii

1912 April – 6’ concrete sidewalk proposed for the north side of 4th Avenue from Victoria to Woodland Drives at a cost of $2,650.50 with city paying $144.45; and for the south side from Victoria Drive to Commercial Drive at a cost of $1,299.00 with the city paying $35.40.xiii

1912 June – 6’ concrete sidewalk is proposed for both sides of 4th Avenue from Victoria Drive to Lakewood Drive at a cost of $2,610.00 with the city paying $248.85.xiv
