Bismark Street

Bismark Street was renamed Kitchener Street during World War I.

1904 June –- R. Perry, D. Harris and others petitioned the Board of Works “for the clearing of Bismark Street from Park Drive to Block 137a.” This was referred to the Engineer. They approved this later in June.i

1904 December — A.H. Westrup and others asked for a “walk on Bismark for one block east of Park Drive.” After a report from the Engineer, the Board approved it on 8th December. ii

April 1905 — The following acquisitions from Appropriations were approved by the Board of Works: iii

              Ward 3 Grading Victoria Drive $1,000

              Ward 4 Grading Cotton Drive $ 260

              Ward 4 Grading Woodland Drive $ 260

              Ward 4 Grading Bismark Street $ 200

1905 October — The Board approved a 3-plank sidewalk on Bismark from Park Drive to Woodland Drive at a cost of $110. iv

1906 February – Board of Works approved a sidewalk on Bismark from Victoria Drive to 280 feet east at a cost of $42. v

1906 March – A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the south side of Bismark between Victoria Drive to 280’ east. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed 21st May.vi

1906 May — The Board recommended that Bismark be opened and rough-graded from Salsbury Drive to Lakewood Drive for $1,000. An appropriation was approved that same month for $1,050, and the work was completed on 7th November. vii

1906 July – In the meanwhile, the chain gang was ordered to open Bismark from Salsbury to Victoria Drives “so that pipe can be laid on the south side of the street.”viii

1907 May — Five residents petitioned the Board of Works: “On behalf of the Property Owners living on the east end of Bismark Street, Grandview, I beg to make application for a three-plank sidewalk on this street from the terminus of the present sidewalk to Lot 9, Block 2B 138. I would point out that the street is cleared but in wet weather there is no means of egress … to Park Drive without getting into mud.”ix That same month, a 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the east side of Bismark from 200’ east of Victoria to Lakewood Drive. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed on 19 July. In addition, the chaingang cleared and graded Bismark between Park Drive and Salsbury Drive. x

1907 July – 6’ concrete sidewalk proposed for both sides of Bismark between Woodland Drive and Victoria Drive. Cost $4,258.32 with city paying $773.85. xi

1907 October — Three residents wrote to the Board “to lay a 3-plank sidewalk on the northside of Bismark Street between Park Drive & Salsbury Drive; also that a gutter be made in the street.”xii

1907 December – Three-plank sidewalk was laid on the north side of Bismark Street between Park and Salsbury Drives. George Freeman was the foreman and the work was completed on 16th January 1908. xiii

1908 March – A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the south side of Bismark from Victoria to Salsbury Drives. The work was completed on 7th April. xiv

1908 June – A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on the north side of Bismark from Victoria Drive to Lakewood. The work was completed on 20th July. xv

1908 September – An appropriation of $2,300 was approved for a new sewer on Bismark between Park Drive and Victoria Drive. The work was undertaken in January and February 1909 under foreman J. Burgoyne at a cost of $1,540.42.xvi

1909 February – An appropriation of $1,200 was approved to clear and grade Bismark from Lakewood to the City Limits. The work was carried out under foreman George Freeman and was completed on 12th June at a cost of $1,238.48. In the same month another appropriation of $200 was approved to clear, grade and rock Bismark between McLean and Odlum Drive. The work was completed on 23 July and cost $153.41. xvii

1909 July – A an appropriation of $2,060 was approved for a new sewer to be laid on Bismark between Victoria and Lakewood Drives. The work was undertaken in the summer under foreman J. Bourgoyne and was completed on 9th September at a cost of $1,537.86. xviii

1910 January – A 3-plank sidewalk was laid on both sides of Bismark from Lakewood Drive to a point 200’ west, and the north side of Bismark from Odlum Drive to a point 150’ east. The work was completed on 3rd June. xix

1910 May – 6’ concrete sidewalks were laid on both sides of Bismark from Woodland to Victoria Drives. The appropriation was for $4,258.32 and the actual cost was $3,765.23. xx

1910 December – An appropriation was approved for $4,000 to lay a new sewer along Bismark from Odlum to Park Drives. The final cost was $3,374.64.xxi

1911 May – An appropriation was approved for $6,054 to grade and rock Bismark from Odlum to Victoria Drives. The final cost was $6,355.52. xxii

1911 June – An appropriation was approved for $1,422 to grade Bismark from Lakewood Drive to Nanaimo Street. The final cost was $1,345.67. xxiii

1913 April – An appropriation was approved for $3,150 to lay a new sewer along Bismark from Lakewood Drive to Garden. The final cost was $2,104.17. xxiv

1913 June – In July 1912 an appropriation was approved for $2,500 for a 6’ concrete sidewalk on both sides of Bismark Street between Victoria Drive and Lakewood Drive. In June 1913, the list of local improvements was published that showed this work at a cost of $3,513.24 with the city paying $144.43. The final cost appears to have been $3,100.84 xxv

1914 March – Appropriations were approved for $2,900 to grade and rock Bismark from Victoria to Lakewood Drives. The final cost was $2,548.56. xxvi
